Mount Wellington Tours
Tasmania is undoubtedly one of Australia’s most stunning states and Mount Wellington (now known as Kunanyi / Mount Wellington) certainly contributes to the ‘Apple Isle’s’ overall appeal. Located on the Island’s southeast coastal area, Mount Wellington – which is the 1,269 metre (4,163 ft) summit mountain of the Wellington Range – towers magnificently over the city of Hobart and is quite often snowcapped – even in the warmer months!
The views of Mount Wellington from Hobart are spectacular, with escarpments of columned dolerite – called the Organ Pipes – being one of its most noticeable scenic features. With 18,000 hectares of wilderness accessible just 20 minutes from the city, the Mount Wellington reserve area is one of Hobart’s primary tourist drawcards. The summit lookout is accessible by sealed road, lending views of the CBD and Derwent Estuary below; however, it’s certainly much more fun to hike your way through the thick forest, spotting some of the amazing flora and fauna that exists on the mountainside. If you’re observant, you’ll spot a plethora of bird species, possums, potoroos, pademelons, bandicoots, bettongs, platypus and echidnas.
Walks through the Mountain’s base – as well as through the surrounding mountainous areas of Sleeping Beauty, Collins Cap and Cathedral Rock – range from extremely easy and relaxing to challenging and tough. Regardless of the difficulty of the route you choose, you’re sure to be awestruck by the lush vegetation, clear cascades and streams, roaring waterfalls and majestic rock formations. If you’re an adventurous type, you can even try abseiling or rock climbing, horse riding or mountain biking. The best way to experience the area in its entirety though is on a planned tour.
There’s never a perfect time to visit Tasmania’s Mount Wellington – anytime is perfect!
